My new phone. Oh, how I love thee.

I bought a new phone. My significant other told me to. A dream come through for a gadget-lover like me.

Here is a small update on my life, phone-wise. Last year I bought a Nokia E60 which has served me well. It does a crapload of stuff and has built-in wifi. I even got it working with my VOIP-provider to make the 2 international calls I make each year a little bit cheaper. It is a little big and cumbersome, though.

As I run my own company I needed a business phone. So the fate of the E60 was to be demoted to business only. For my private phone I tracked down a Ericsson T39 (In white). The T39 was the first phone I bought, way back when I had just moved away from home. I loved it, but sold it off to a friend when mY lust for a gadget-ier phone got the better of me. So now I was, once again, using a simple -two-tone phone. I loved it, once again. But sadly the quality of the audio left a lot to be desired, said my girlfriend. So I had to find another phone.

I didn’t want to go back to the E60, simply too much I didn’t need. After a few weeks with the easy T39 I had to get something simpler. Then I saw a commercial for the new Nokia 6300. It looked like my old SE T610. So the design was with it from the get-go. Luckily I was in Copenhagen and had plenty of shops to choose from. After a few shops with “Sorry. We have no 6300’s left” I struck gold as one shop had two left. The guy behind me in the queue also wanted a 6300. I had to sign up for a plan with Telia, but as Im living in Denmark they can only get me to pay for 6 months.

Happily bouncing away with my phone, all I had to do was get it unlocked.

Sadly none of the normal small “I can unlock your phone in 5 minutes”-stalls could unlock it because it was too new. So I had to pay a bit more to get Telia to do it. Anyway I had my 6300, and it is fine.

Its small and thin, it has a great screen, responsive keyboard and those small flashing blue strips that lights up when someone calls you. That last one is especially nice for me as Im fond of having my mobile in silent mode.

I’ve signed up and synchronized the phone via Zyb, with only the slightest of hick-ups. Some of my contacts had danish characters in their name, æ, ø & å. And the synchronization tool stalled at one particular contact each time. It didn’t stop, just sat there. So I had a small fortune in GPRS charges after that. But it all worked perfectly after I edited the contact in Zyb’s site. Im not sure why.

There is a built-in browser which works, but I downloaded Opera Mini and Im happy using that. Torn City works wonderfully in Opera.

Writing messages is quick and snappy. I can check my email via IMAP.

The camera is alright. Its not great when the light is dim. But who uses a phone to take real pictures with anyway? I have a digital camera for that. Incidentally, the 6300 has a 2mp. camera, the same as my first actual digital camera.

In conclusion I can only say that Im happy with my new phone.

Update: Ive posted about getting the 6300 to sync via iSync.
