In short: You don’t need it. On your phone, that is.

The s40 system our beloved phone runs on is not susceptible to viruses. Some of the other Nokia phones which run Symbian, a true Operating System, can be hit by viruses. But not s40 phones.

The Nokia 6300, and other s40 phones, can be a healthy bearer of viruses, though. If you upload an already infected file to the phone and pass that file on to other computers, they might get infected as well.

Most of you who have found this site probably found it while searching for an iSync plugin, so a good guess is that you have a Mac. Lucky for you because then you won’t need anti virus on your mac as well. But if you are into that whole Windows thingy, all bets are off.

To sum it all up:
If you have a Nokia 6300 and a Mac, you don’t need an anti virus program.
If you have a Windows PC, get some anti virus on your PC.

Personally I haven’t experienced any problems. I did an Archive & install, so no old stuff from Tiger on my System. That might be a problem if you just did an update of your system.

The installation is the same as always:

Download the Nokia 6300 iSync plugin v. 1.1

Extract the nokia6300phoneplugin.zip (Your browser might do it for you)

Quit iSync if its running

Move the extracted file (Nokia6300.phoneplugin) to ~/Library/PhonePlugins If that folder isn’t there, just create it.

Start iSync and sync away

The plugin, after expanding the .zip-file, will no longer look like a folder in the Finder.

Let me hear what problems you have, and please include if you did an update to Leopard or a clean install.

Im glad you asked. Let me say right away. If you plan on using the pictures for anything other than sending to other phones, don’t bother. As you can see below, I have chosen 4 from the pictures I have taken with my Nokia 6300. Click on the thumbs and you can see the pictures in all their glory. Or rather, in all their somewhat-washed-out, could-need-a-bit-of-sharpening, glory.

This is my son. Isn’t he cute? He’s a recurring target for my cameras. I guess that’s just the way parents are.

My son again. As above the photo was taken in bright sunlight.

Last one of my son. Promise. This was taken on a slightly overcast day. And quite windy, which has nothing to do with the photograph other than I hate a photograph without at least a paragraph of text.

A sunset on the very nature-y sourthern end of a Danish island called Langeland. It was far more beautifull in person than this photo makes it look. It really shows off the Nokia 6300 lack of abillity when there is not enough light.

Did you take any pictures with your 6300 you would like to share? Someone should probably make a flickr-group with pictures from 6300’s. It isn’t as far-fetched as some of the groups I’ve seen.

Opera Software just released the Opera Mini 4 beta. Which rocks on the 6300.

With the new beta you don’t have to see the pages translated to a thin slice of their full glory. You can have it all and choose the squish them down if you want to. This is similar to Opera for Symbian phones which I liked when I used my E60.

Point you phone at mini.opera.com/beta and download away. You wont look back. Promise.

Here are a list of the new features:

Surf the Web in style
The Web. Period. You can get any site, anywhere, at any time. It’s your Web, to go.

“X marks the spot” — start at the right place
When you load a page, Opera Mini will automatically suggest a place to begin reading. When it’s time to dive into the page, Opera Mini zooms in and cleanly focuses on the content you want.

Stay at the right place
Opera Mini dynamically changes the size of text and images to make it convenient to read without a lot of unnecessary scrolling.

A mouse!
We included a virtual mouse to make it easy to scroll in any direction. The mouse cursor will look for content and links, and snap the view to them.

Power scrolling
Scroll faster using the keypad. Simply hit 2 to go up, 4 to go left, 6 to go right and 8 to go down. Opera Mini will snap the view to the content. Hit 5 to zoom in and out.

Fast and cheaper browsing
As always, Opera Mini delivers the pages you want, quickly. In doing so, Opera Mini makes your data bill cheaper, too. Opera Mini loads pages more than 2x faster than other mobile browsers.

Good old Small Screen Rendering
Is it just too much scrolling for you? Turn on “Fit to width” and enjoy the pages in the Small Screen Rendering view. In this view, the structure of the Web page is changed into a single vertical column, removing the need to scroll horizontally while browsing.

Quick access to key functionality with the context menu
Hit 1 to open the context menu, where you can turn on Small Screen Rendering (Fit to width) or reload the page. When focusing the cursor on a link you can see where the link really will take you, or choose to open the linked page with images turned off. When browsing with images off, you can choose to load the images in a page by selecting “Load images”. You can even load the image in its original size and uncompressed, high quality by choosing “Open image”.

Web designers go wild
We included all the cool CSS support you need to make your mobile web pages look pixel perfect.

It’s just the beta
More crazy stuff will arrive shortly.

As some of you might know I moved from a Nokia E60 to the 6300 some time ago. I still use the E60 as my company phone.

The E60 spoiled me. As a true Symbian phone it was easy to find software for it, Opera has a kick-ass browser for Symbian. Opera does have a browser for Series 40 (which, amongst others, is the 6300), but it’s a bit basic, plus you won’t see the site as it supposed to as it translates it before showing it to you. This is fine for something, not so fine for others.

The reason software for the 6300 is so hard to find is that Series 40 is not a “true” operating system. You cant write complete applications as you can for Symbian. The closest you can get is java.

Im sure there are good java-applications out there that runs fine on the 6300. But there are just too many crap ones to wade through to find first.

Today I found a Worms game that supposedly could run on my 6300. After jumping through a few hoops I got it on my phone. (On a side note; I cant understand why mobile-software-sites insist on you downloading their software from your phone via WAP. Makes no sense.) And it ran fine. Gameplay was fluid and I killed a lot of worms. The only problem was that the game only showed on ~1/3 of the screen. It was like the game thought my screen was only 1/3 of the size it really is. Stupid.

Searching for Nokia 6300 software on Google doesn’t reveal much either. More spam than ham. Nokia does have a marketplace for software but as you can see if you follow the link, the top 10 is mostly card-games and dictionaries. Number 10 is a java-application that will show a large spot on the screen in either white or a color, and thus enabling you to use the phone as a flashlight. Somehow it doesn’t bode well for my quest for some decent applications if that application is number 10 on Nokias own software list.

So… Have you installed any third-party applications on your Nokia 6300? If so, share it with me and the readers in a comment.

As you might have guessed, its for the Nokia 6300. Making this plugin was actually pretty easy. That’s why I’m giving it away. It should work, but I guarantee nothing. It might kill your cat, it might make you coffee.

Installation of the Nokia 6300 iSync-plugin

Download the Nokia 6300 iSync-plugin.

That should be it. If not leave a comment here. In fact, leave a comment here if you find it useful too.
